Sports Physicals in Chicago, IL

When your child wants to join a school team, community league, or sports camp, a pre-participation physical is usually required. At Child and Adolescent Health Associates in Chicago, we provide comprehensive sports physicals to make sure young athletes are healthy, safe, and ready to play.

What a Sports Physical Includes

A sports physical is more than just a formality. It’s an opportunity to evaluate your child’s health, identify medical concerns that could affect their performance or safety, and discuss ways to prevent injury.

During the visit, our providers review:

  • Medical history – including past illnesses, injuries, surgeries, and family health risks
  • Growth and development – checking height, weight, and pubertal milestones
  • Cardiovascular health – listening for heart murmurs or rhythm changes
  • Lung function – screening for asthma or breathing issues
  • Joints and muscles – assessing strength, flexibility, and range of motion<
  • Mental health and lifestyle – managing stress, nutrition, sleep, and more

This exam is based on each child’s age and sport. If your child has a chronic condition like asthma, ADHD, or diabetes, we’ll also make sure they have a plan to stay healthy and safe during games and practices.

Why You Should Schedule With Your Pediatrician

Some quick-stop clinics offer sports physicals, but visiting your pediatrician at Child and Adolescent Health Associates is the better choice. We already know your child’s medical history and can spot subtle changes or patterns that others might miss.

A visit with your Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and South Loop providers also allows you to ask questions about your child’s physical and emotional readiness, training habits, or any concerns they might not bring up on their own. We approach these conversations with curiosity and care, encouraging kids and teens to feel comfortable speaking up.

Timing and Paperwork

Many schools and leagues require an updated physical every year. We recommend scheduling your child’s sports physical at least 6–8 weeks before the start of the season in case any follow-up care is needed.

If your child has already had their annual wellness exam in the last year, a separate sports clearance form may be all that’s required. Just let us know, and we’ll help with the paperwork.
