Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to bond with your baby and offer her some great health benefits right from the beginning.  For some moms breastfeeding will be easy...and for a lot of moms it will take a bit more work.  We are committed to helping you make breastfeeding a success!

We encourage you to start breastfeeding at the hospital.  You will have the opportunity to meet many different nurses who are experienced in helping new moms.  Remember, the same techniques won't work for every baby/mom so pick up tips from everyone you meet.  There are certain medical reasons babies need formula such as low blood sugar, excessive weight loss, or not having enough wet diapers (and we'll discuss this with you if it comes up).  Otherwise, it is okay to exclusively breastfeed even if your milk hasn't come in yet.  In fact we don't EXPECT your milk to come in until 3-5 days after baby is born!

In the office, you are welcome to nurse your baby in the waiting room or we are happy to room you quickly so you can nurse in private.  If baby is struggling to latch or you feel like breastfeeding isn't going well, there are many wonderful lactation consultants who can come to your home and help you more.  Two of our favorites are Lactation Partners and JOC Lactation .  Our nurse practitioner Jessica Offenbach is also a certified breastfeeding counselor.  You can schedule an appointment with her for additional support.
