As a parent, it’s natural to worry when your child isn’t feeling well. While many minor illnesses can be managed at home with rest and fluids, there are times when a sick visit to the doctor is necessary to ensure your child gets the care they need. At Child and Adolescent Health Associates in Chicago, IL, we specialize in providing compassionate, expert care for sick visits, helping families navigate everything from fevers to persistent coughs.
When to Schedule a Sick Visit
If your child has a fever that lasts more than 2-3 days, is very high (above 104°F), or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms like lethargy, difficulty breathing, or a rash, it’s time to schedule a sick visit. For infants under three months old, any fever over 100.4°F should be evaluated immediately. Persistent symptoms, such as a cough that lasts more than a week, ear pain, or a sore throat that doesn’t improve are also reasons to see a CAHA provider. These could indicate conditions like an ear infection or strep throat that may require treatment. Vomiting, diarrhea, or signs of dehydration should also prompt a visit to the pediatrician. Gastrointestinal issues can quickly lead to dehydration, especially in younger children, so it’s important to address these symptoms promptly. Finally, if your child is unusually irritable, lethargic, or just doesn’t seem like themselves, trust your instincts and schedule a sick visit. As a parent, you know your child best, and behavioral changes can often be an early sign that something isn’t right.
What to Expect During a Sick Visit
At Child and Adolescent Health Associates, we strive to make sick visits as comfortable and efficient as possible for both parents and children. During the appointment, the CAHA provider will ask about your child’s symptoms, medical history, and any changes you’ve noticed in their behavior or health. A thorough physical exam will be performed to assess your child’s condition and identify the underlying cause of their symptoms.
Depending on the situation, additional tests, such as a throat swab, urine test, or blood work, may be recommended to confirm a diagnosis. Once the cause of your child’s illness is identified, your CAHA provider will discuss the best course of treatment, whether that involves medication, supportive care, or further evaluation. We’ll also provide guidance on how to manage your child’s symptoms at home and when to follow up if needed.
